Richmond, Virginia, is a goldmine of gorgeous locations for photoshoots. Whether you're looking for a lush garden, urban charm, or a cozy vibe, this city offers something for everyone. As a Virginia wedding and portrait photographer, I’ve scouted countless spots and gathered a few of my frequent haunts into this guide. Please note that this is in no particular order.

1. Maymont

It’s impossible to talk about Richmond photoshoots without mentioning Maymont. This 100-acre estate is like stepping into a fairytale. From cascading waterfalls to the Italian garden, Japanese garden, and sprawling hills, there’s no shortage of beauty here. Personally, I love coming here for picnics and soaking up the magical atmosphere—it feels like being in a fantasy land. For photos, Maymont offers endless possibilities, whether you're looking for lush greenery, romantic bridges, or elegant architecture. Golden hour at Maymont is especially enchanting, turning every shot into a dreamy masterpiece.

2. VMFA Sculpture Garden

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Sculpture Garden is a recently renovated gem. The updates have made it even more stunning, with contemporary sculptures and beautifully landscaped pathways that create the perfect blend of art and nature. While the museum does charge a fee for indoor shoots, outdoor sessions in the garden are free, making it an accessible and breathtaking location. Whether you’re drawn to the modern art pieces or the tranquil atmosphere, this spot is a top choice for creative and unique portraits.

3. The Capitol Grounds

The Virginia State Capitol is a historic gem, offering stunning columns, manicured lawns, and sweeping staircases. It’s an ideal spot for timeless, classic portraits that exude elegance. The combination of history and architectural beauty makes it a standout location for engagements, elopements, and family sessions alike.

4. Libbie Hill Park

If you’re after Richmond’s iconic cityscape, Libbie Hill Park delivers. Perched above the James River, it offers breathtaking views of the city skyline and is a favorite for engagement sessions and elopements. The iconic Lucky Strike stack adds a touch of industrial charm, while the ginkgo trees lining the main paths create a golden canopy in the fall. The surrounding neighborhoods are equally picturesque, with charming homes and quaint streets that add even more character to your session.

5. Bryan Park

Bryan Park holds a special place in my heart—it’s where my wife proposed to me! Beyond the sentimental value, it’s also an incredible spot for photoshoots. The park’s wide-open spaces are perfect for kids or dogs to run around and burn off some energy, making it ideal for family sessions. Paved trails through the forest provide a serene backdrop, and during spring, the park comes alive with colorful blooms that add a touch of magic to every shot.

6. Forest Hill Park

Forest Hill Park is a neighborhood treasure with so much to offer. The open fields and shaded areas are perfect for laid-back family sessions, while the paved trails make it easy to explore. If you’re willing to venture down a steep slope, you’ll find a stunning lake with a walking path that loops all the way around it. The reflections on the water and the surrounding greenery create a peaceful and picturesque setting for any photoshoot.

7. Belle Isle

For the adventurous at heart, Belle Isle combines rugged nature with industrial charm. The James River is the star of the show here, offering opportunities for playful, candid moments. Whether it’s hopping across river rocks, splashing in the water, or simply taking in the view from the pedestrian bridge, Belle Isle is a versatile location that’s perfect for capturing both fun and romantic vibes. The mix of nature and history makes it a standout choice for couples or families.

8. Canal Walk

Richmond’s Canal Walk blends urban vibes with historic architecture, offering a unique backdrop for photos. Perfect for edgy portraits, engagement shoots, or even elopement photos, it features vibrant murals, scenic water views, and charming cobblestone streets. The variety of textures and colors makes this spot endlessly creative, whether you’re looking for bold and modern or soft and romantic.

9. Crump Park

With wooden fences, charming trails, and a playground - this park is great for year round rustic photos. You'd have no idea that Richmond City is just a few miles away. There's also a museum at the park with occasional events and exhibits. You can tie visiting them in with your photoshoot and make a whole afternoon of it!

10. Your Home

Never underestimate the power of a home photoshoot! Your house is filled with meaningful spaces that make your photos unique. From cozy nurseries to well-loved kitchens, your home tells your family’s story. It’s also the most comfortable environment for babies and kids, making it a stress-free option for family sessions. Plus, it's always a hoot to include all members of the family (yes, even the fuzzy four legged ones).
